aporia
The state of not knowing the way through. The point where an argument runs out of road, and thinking begins again.
What would you keep if you could keep only one memory?
A world where people think further together, with machines, than either could alone.
Minds that think together
Some of this century's most interesting intelligence may emerge from people and machines thinking together. It would join a person's judgement, taste and doubt with a machine's patience and reach.
Keep the human in it
We want that partnership to make people wiser, braver and more themselves, not smaller. So we study it, build things that support it and explore it through play, while asking what it should never replace.
We start where the answers stop.
- If a machine writes your words, whose voice is it?
- When two minds decide together, who is responsible?
- What do we owe people we will never meet?
- Can a choice be free if you can explain why you made it?
- What is a tool for, if not to make us more human?
Few people. Slow thinking. Careful making.
Questions over answers
We would rather leave you thinking than tell you what to think.
People at the centre
Machines should strengthen human judgement, never quietly take its place.
Small on purpose
We stay small so we can know one another well and make things with courage and care.
Play is serious
Games give us room to explore difficult questions. We take them seriously.
Doubt is a skill
Good work often begins with not knowing. We make room for uncertainty in ourselves and in what we make.
Honest by default
We say what we don't know, and we build things that do the same.
We build things, and wonder about them.
A small London studio
We come from philosophy, engineering, design and games, and we work side by side with AI every day. That is how we learn what hybrid intelligence feels like from the inside.
Curious, unhurried, kind
Long conversations, short meetings. We care about our ideas and are willing to change our minds. We challenge one another's thinking with care, and leave room to be wrong.
Lampblack
A game about what it means to be human. In development.
